There’s always an excuse for time out. Summer’s heat draws us to the seaside for lazy days or barbecues, while autumn is perfect for long walks. The snowy slopes bring winter sports entertainment and a reason to cosy up by the fireplace, until spring blossoms draw us outdoors again.

Outdoor spaces, patios and gardens are central to our southern hemisphere culture. The section on compact and creative spaces illustrates how a small courtyard, rooftop garden or exposed backyard can provide a haven of privacy or the perfect place to view a sunset over the city. Quirky furniture, lighting, art and bright colours enliven these small areas. In one example, a raised pool solves space limitations and pool fencing requirements with ease.
